Every Detara rug is hand-knotted using carefully selected wool, silk, or a considered combination of both. Each material brings its own character to a design, while traditional hand-knotting gives every piece lasting depth, texture, and individuality.

Our Materials

New Zealand Wool

New Zealand Wool

Naturally soft, resilient, and rich in texture, New Zealand wool forms a beautiful foundation for everyday living. Its clean, bright fibres absorb colour exceptionally well, producing clear, nuanced tones while remaining durable and comfortable underfoot.

Silk

Silk

Silk brings luminosity, softness, and fine definition to a design. Its natural sheen catches the light from different angles, creating subtle changes in depth and colour throughout the day. It can be used throughout a rug or selectively to highlight particular details and patterns.

Wool and Silk, Together

Combining wool and silk brings together the strengths of both materials. Wool provides warmth, texture, and resilience, while silk introduces contrast and a gentle reflective quality. Used thoughtfully, the two fibres can give a design greater depth without overwhelming its character.

Our Technique

Hand-Knotted

Every Detara rug is made by hand using the traditional hand-knotting method. Artisans tie each individual knot around the warp threads before carefully cutting and finishing the pile.

Depending on its size and complexity, a single rug may contain hundreds of thousands of knots and take several months to complete. The result is a rug with exceptional detail, durability, and depth—made to be lived with and appreciated for years to come.
