About Detara

Detara was founded by Aleksandra. Before making the UAE her home, she lived in Nepal for several years, developing a lasting connection to the country, its people and its culture.

Nepal has a distinguished tradition of hand-knotted rug-making, shaped by generations of specialist knowledge and closely connected to Tibetan weaving traditions. When Detara was created, Nepal was therefore more than a practical production location. It was a place our founder knew personally and a natural foundation for the kind of rugs we wanted to make: carefully crafted, materially honest and intended to last.

Rather than building an enormous catalogue, we introduce original designs in focused, carefully considered collections.

Our aesthetic is contemporary and shaped by the place we serve. We draw inspiration from the UAE’s landscape, architecture and cultural character while considering the varied interiors and tastes of the international community that calls the country home.

Each design provides a strong starting point while leaving room for individual choice. Customers can explore different colourways, materials and dimensions, allowing the finished rug to feel personal without making the process overwhelming.

Every Detara rug is made to order rather than produced for a warehouse or showroom.

Once the design, colours, materials and dimensions have been confirmed, the rug is hand-knotted in Nepal using premium New Zealand wool, genuine silk or a considered combination of the two. It is made specifically for its intended home and has never spent months waiting in inventory for the right buyer.

Hand-knotting is a slow and highly skilled process, and a rug can take several months to complete. We believe the result is worth the wait: a newly made piece with the texture, depth and subtle variation that can only come from work performed by hand.

Detara was created as an online-first alternative to the traditional showroom experience.

Our designs, options and prices can be explored openly online. Selected rugs can be personalised directly through our customiser, while our Home Sample Service allows customers to experience the colours, materials and texture in their own space before committing to a full-size rug.

Guidance is always available when it is wanted, but the entire journey can also be completed online without negotiation or sales pressure.

By operating without a large showroom or extensive inventory, we can place more of the value where it belongs: in the design, natural materials and workmanship of the finished rug.

Detara is still at the beginning, and we intend to build it carefully—introducing original designs with purpose and making every stage of choosing and commissioning a handmade rug feel as considered as the rug itself.
