How a Rug Is Made
From the moment your design is confirmed to the day your rug arrives, every stage is guided by skilled hands, careful attention, and generations of craft.
Your design is confirmed
Once your order is placed, we review every detail—from the dimensions and colourway to your chosen materials. The final specifications are then shared with our artisan partners in Nepal, ready for production to begin.

The yarn is prepared and dyed
Wool and silk yarns are carefully selected and dyed to match your chosen colourway. The yarn is washed, dried, and prepared for weaving, creating the foundation for the rug’s colour, texture, and character.

Your rug is hand-knotted
Skilled artisans begin knotting your rug by hand on a traditional loom, gradually building the design row by row. Depending on its size and complexity, this intricate process can take several weeks or months to complete.

Your rug is washed
Once weaving is complete, the rug is gently washed to remove loose fibres and bring out the richness of its colours and the natural softness of its materials. It is then carefully dried before moving to the finishing stage.

Your rug is stretched and finished
The rug is stretched to refine its shape and help it lie flat. Its surface is carefully trimmed, its edges are secured, and every detail is inspected by hand to ensure a beautifully balanced finish.

Your rug is delivered
After a final quality inspection, your rug is carefully rolled, wrapped, and protected for its journey to your home. Once it arrives, simply unroll it and allow it a little time to settle into place.

Every Detara rug is the result of weeks or months of patient, skilled work. More than a finished piece, it carries the touch of every artisan involved in bringing it to life.
