Carpet Care

Proper care preserves the beauty, texture, and longevity of your handcrafted rug. These guidelines will help you maintain
your investment and enjoy your Detara rug for generations to come.

REGULAR CARE

REGULAR CARE

Vacuum gently

Vacuum your rug regularly using low suction and a flat upholstery attachment. Avoid rotating brushes, beater bars and robotic vacuums, as they can pull at the fibres and damage the surface or edges.

Rotate periodically

Rotate your rug every three to six months to encourage even wear and minimise differences caused by sunlight, foot traffic and furniture placement.

Use a rug pad

Place a suitable non-slip rug pad beneath your rug. It helps prevent movement, provides additional cushioning and reduces friction against the floor.

Limit direct sunlight

Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight may gradually fade natural fibres and dyes. Use curtains, blinds or UV-filtering window treatments where necessary, and rotate the rug periodically.

Expect some initial shedding

A small amount of shedding is natural with a new wool rug and should lessen with regular use and gentle vacuuming. Do not pull loose fibres; carefully trim them level with the pile using scissors.

SPILLS & STAINS

SPILLS & STAINS

Act quickly

Attend to spills as soon as possible. Carefully remove any solids with a spoon, then absorb as much liquid as you can using a clean, white cloth or plain paper towel.

Blot, do not rub

Blot the affected area gently, working from the outside towards the centre. Rubbing or scrubbing can spread the stain, distort the pile and push liquid deeper into the rug.

Avoid household cleaners

Do not apply bleach, detergents, stain removers or homemade cleaning mixtures. These may discolour or damage wool, silk and natural dyes.

Use water sparingly

If needed, lightly blot with a clean cloth dampened with cool water, taking care not to saturate the rug. Always test an inconspicuous area first and stop if any colour transfers.

Consult a specialist

For persistent stains, pet accidents, oil-based spills or marks affecting silk, contact a professional cleaner experienced with hand-knotted wool and silk rugs.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

Clean only when needed

Professional cleaning should be based on the rug’s condition, placement and level of use rather than a fixed schedule. Unnecessary cleaning can place additional stress on natural fibres.

Choose a rug specialist

Use a cleaner who specialises in hand-knotted wool and silk rugs. Tell them the rug’s materials and share details of any stains or previous treatments before cleaning begins.

Avoid steam and machine cleaning

Do not steam-clean, dry-clean or place your rug in a washing machine. Excessive heat, moisture and harsh chemicals can affect its fibres, dyes and shape.

Do not clean silk at home

Silk and wool-and-silk rugs require particularly careful treatment. For anything beyond gentle surface vacuuming and immediate blotting, seek advice from a qualified specialist.

STORAGE

STORAGE

Clean before storing

Make sure the rug is clean and completely dry before storage. Dirt, moisture and food residue can attract pests or cause odours, staining and mildew.

Roll, do not fold

Roll the rug evenly rather than folding it, as folds may create lasting creases or place stress on the foundation. For longer storage, roll it around a sturdy acid-free tube where possible.

Wrap with breathable material

Protect the rolled rug with clean cotton, muslin or another breathable covering. Avoid storing it in airtight plastic for extended periods, as trapped moisture can cause damage.

Choose a suitable location

Store the rug horizontally in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, damp, heat and heavy objects.

Check it periodically

Inspect the rug occasionally for moisture or signs of moth activity, particularly during long-term storage. Re-roll it in the opposite direction to help prevent lasting pressure marks.

REPAIRS

REPAIRS

Address damage early

Attend to loose edges, damaged areas or unravelled knots promptly. Small issues are usually easier to repair before they spread or affect the rug’s foundation.

Do not pull loose threads

If a thread or fibre rises above the surface, do not pull it. Carefully trim it level with the surrounding pile, or contact a specialist if you are unsure.

Avoid DIY repairs

Glue, tape and household sewing methods can cause permanent damage and make professional restoration more difficult. Repairs should be completed by someone experienced with hand-knotted rugs.
